MALE TEACHERS have abused an estimated 12,660 schoolgirls in the last five years, said a recent report from Kenya’s Teachers Service Commission.
The report by the non-profit Centre for Rights Education and Awareness for 2003 and 2007, showed some teachers were serial sexual offenders, molesting up to 20 girls per school before being reported.
The report said that there was no action was taken against them when they were caught. Instead they were transferred to another school. Most cases are unreported, with only 633 teachers charged with sexual abuse in the five years, reported Africanews.com.
It said things could be much worse because more than 90 percent of sexual abuse cases were never reported to TSC and were in fact covered up by teaching staff and education officials, who often intimidated victims.
The report claimed parents were also ignorant of TSC disciplinary procedures or sometimes preferred to ‘hush up’ the abuse for fear that their daughters would be stigmatized.
